April 2005 A suggestion was recently submitted to the HHS Suggestion Box
regarding information in the school bulletin, announcements by the
Progressive Club and recent articles in the Hounds Bark.
Dear Concerned Parent:
Thank you for your suggestions; your concerns are our concerns.
We have read, pondered and discussed your comments. As we continue to
research several points, we would like to let you know the following:
1 – All teachers have the opportunity to submit items for the bulletin
2 – While the Progressive Club may “push” its agenda and while some of our
committee also find some of its flyers objectionable, they do have the
freedom, as they find appropriate, to announce upcoming activities
3 – In order for a club to be listed in the school handbook, there are a
list of requirements the club must meet. Most likely, as with other clubs,
the Christian Club hasn’t been able to draft a constitution yet. Once it is
written and in place, the club will be listed along with the others.
4 – As far as we know, all HHS teachers encourage their students to write
decently. Of course, it should be pointed out that there are many
definitions of what is decent.
5 – Concerning the Hounds Bark, student-directed newspapers, under
California law, have the legal right to edit and censor themselves, and
while their advisor maintains a high level of decency and expectations for
newsworthy articles, again, what some may find perfectly acceptable, some
may find highly objectionable.
We would welcome the opportunity to informally speak with you about your
concerns. Please feel free to contact Communications Committee
representative Brent Mortensen at either
bmortensen@husd.com or 431-3589.
