Standards and Assessment

The California Department of Education has adopted academic content standards in the areas of Language Arts, Mathematics, History/Social Science, Science, English Language Development, Visual and Performing Arts and Physical Education. These standards define what students are to learn in specific subjects from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Lesson design, textbooks and other instructional materials and student work are organized to support students mastering these standards.

The standards are available for review at any of our sites as well as on the web:

The CDE has a comprehensive assessment program in place to assess how students are performing on the state standards. The highlights are:

  • All students in grades 2-11 take the California Standards Test also known as STAR in the Spring. This test measures their performance on the state´s Language Arts and Mathematics standards. At certain grade levels, students are also assessed in History-Social Science (Grades 8-11) and Science (grades 5, 8-11).
  • All students in grades 5, 7 and 9 take the California Physical Fitness Test in the Spring. This test measures their flexibility, strength, endurance and body mass index.
  • In order to receive a high school diploma, students must pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). They are eligible to take the test during 10th grade. If a student does not pass, they have additional opportunities to take the test.
  • All students who are English Learners are given the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) each Fall. This test measures their progress in learning English (Listening/Speaking/Reading/Writing).
  • Student with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) make take tests with accommodations or medications. They may also be assessed with alternative forms of the STAR such as the California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPT) or California Modified Assessment (CMA) as determined by their IEPs.
  • Most of our 11th grade students take the Early Assessment Program (EAP) test. The results from this test are forwarded to the California State University (CSU) system. It enables the CSU to determine what student needs are as they enroll in the CSU system.

District Program Improvement News

Here are the most recent documents relating to our Program Improvement status as a district. The Interim Report (dated 9/29/08) and Local Educational Agency Plan have been submitted to the California Department of Education according to their requirement to submit them by October 1, 2008. The Interim Report analyzes the ability of our District to organize all of our systems (Leadership, Governance, Human Resources, etc.) to support the activities necessary to increase student achievement with the end-goal of exiting Program Improvement Status. The Local Educational Agency Plan (also referred to as the LEA Plan or LEAP) describes what we will do to increase student achievement over the next three years. We are currently working on a timeline to assess what will be done this year as the highest priority, highest leverage activities.
