ENGLISH LEARNER
ADVISORY COMMITTEES
English Learner Advisory Committees (ELAC) are required at any school that has twenty-one or more students who have a home language other than English and who are working on reaching proficiency in English. The committee is composed of a majority of parents of English learners.
They meet throughout the year to address the following requirements:
- Advising the School Site Council on the development of the Single Plan for Student Achievement.
- Advising the principal and staff on the school´s program for English Learners.
- Assisting in the development of the school´s needs assessment, language census, and efforts to make parents aware of the importance of school attendance.
ELAC meetings are posted on school activity calendars and announced in school newsletters. They are open to the public.
DISTRICT ENGLISH LEARNER ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The Healdsburg Unified School District also had a District English Learner Advisory Committee or DELAC. It functions as the umbrella organization for the ELAC´s.
It meets at least three time per year to advise the Board of Trustees in:
- Developing a district master plan for educational programs and services for English Learners that takes into consideration the Single Plans for Student Achievement developed by the School Site Councils
- Conducting a district-wide needs assessment on a school-by-school basis
- Establishing a district program, goals, and objectives for programs and services for English Learners
- Developing a plan to ensure compliance with any applicable teacher and instructional aide requirements
- Administering the annual language census
- Reviewing and commenting on the school district´s reclassification procedures
- Reviewing and commenting on the written notifications required to be sent to parents and guardians
DELAC meetings are held at least three times a year. They are posted on school calendars and in school newsletters. Twice a year, the DELAC reports to the Board of Trustees at a regularly scheduled Board Meeting.
HSEP
Healdsburg Special Educations Parent Group (HSEP) is a group of parents of Special Education children who attend the Healdsburg Unified School District. HSEP hosts monthly public meetings featuring speakers on topics concerning Special Education followed by a Parent Support Group Meeting. Meetings are held monthly during the school year at Healdsburg High School, Room 45 from 6:30 – 8:15 usually on the third Monday of the month. Spanish translation is available.
