Language Arts

By the end of Kindergarten

Reading

 

Students will:

 

•Choose books independently

 

•Demonstrate understanding of concepts about print and book handling skills (e.g., follow left to right, top to bottom)

 

•Recognize and name upper and lower case letters

 

•Match letters with sounds

 

•Use finger pointing to match spoken word with written word

 

•Read some names and high interest words

 

•Use pictures and context to make predictions about story

 

•Respond to text connecting it to personal experience

 

•Identify and match labeled pictures to words from within basic categories (e.g., color, shape, names, foods)

 

•Retell a story that has been read aloud

 

Speaking and Listening

 

Students will:

 

•Demonstrate good manners

 

•Participate in class discussion

 

•Relate an experience or creative story in a logical sequence

 

•Recite personal information; whole name, street name and phone number

 

•Follow three step directions

 

•Produce rhyming words

 

 

Writing

 

Students will:

 

•Writing Domains: Autobiographical, Story, and Observational Writing

 

•Draw pictures to tell a story

 

•Write words, phrases, sentences using spelling at appropriate level

 

•Print first name correctly (e.g., Tommy not TOMMY)

 

•Spell the 10 high frequency words
