Language Arts

By the end of SEVENTH GRADE

 

Reading

 

Students will:

 

•Read 12 books/1800 pages from a variety of fiction and nonfiction

 

•Identify and trace the author's purpose and point of view

 

•Examine author's evidence to support claims and assertions

 

•Identify and understand significant literary devices

 

•Analyze a character using the character's thoughts, words, speech patterns, and deeds

 

•Compare recurring themes across texts

 

•Identify idioms, analogies, metaphors, and similes in prose and poetry

 

•Use reading strategies: context clues, rereading, self-correction, reading with others, predicting, questioning, clarifying, and

summarizing

 

•Clarify word meanings through the use of contextual clues, definition, example, contrast or restatement

 

•Differentiate between fact and opinion

 

•Use knowledge of Greek and Latin roots and affixes to understand content area vocabulary

 

•Analyze a range of responses to a literary work

 

Speaking and Listening

 

Students will:

 

•Speak with clarity and fluency

 

•Speak appropriately to different audiences

 

•Present effectively various types of oral presentations

 

•Use appropriate visual aids for presentation

 

Writing

 

Students will:

 

•Write daily for fluency and clarity

 

•Writing Domains: Report of Information, Autobiographical Incident, Story, and Problem Solution

 

•Support all statements and claims with specific examples

 

•Develop a coherent essay that makes effective transitions

 

•Write summaries that contain main ideas of the event/article

 

•Write a story that develops a plot with beginning, conflict, rising action, climax, and resolution

 

•Write in a variety of forms including friendly letter, reviews, poetry, response to literature, stories, and essays

 

•Use strategies of note-taking, outlining, and summarizing

 

•Use appropriate grammar

 

•Use correct capitalization and punctuation

 

•Spell words correctly by applying the correct spelling of roots and affixes

 

•Identify and use infinitives, and correct pronoun and antecedent reference

 

•Identify types and structures of sentences

 

•Locate information using a variety of consumer, workplace, and public documents
