Language Arts

By the end of THIRD GRADE

 

Reading

 

Students will:

 

•Read independently every day in class

 

•Read, discuss and respond to a variety of literature

 

•Be able to summarize a story

 

•Compare information on the same topic/theme from two or more selections

 

•Distinguish between cause and effect, fact and opinion, main idea and supporting details in text

 

•Identify parts of a plot and author's purpose (theme)

 

•Read fluently outloud with good expression; self-correct errors

 

•Expand use of reading strategies: phonics, context, illustrations, word structures (e.g., suffixes, prefixes, contractions, abbreviations, syllables, compound words), word meanings (e.g., antonyms, synonyms, and homophones)

 

•Use parts of the book: table of contents, glossary, title page, index, chapter headings

 

•Identify the point of view

 

•Relate text to personal experience

 

•Distinguish multiple meaning words in text

 

Speaking and Listening

 

Students will:

 

•Plan, produce, and present interpretations of experience, stories, poetry, drama, or song

 

•Demonstrate good manners

 

•Respond to questions in complete sentences

 

•Give oral presentations, including book reports

 

•Maintain comprehension of a story read over time

 

Writing

 

Students will:

 

•Write daily for 30 minutes

 

•Writing Domains: Report of Information, Observation, Story, and Autobiographical Incident

 

•Take at least two drafts to final version

 

•Create a paragraph including topic sentence and supporting facts and details

 

•Write short stories using beginning, middle, and end

 

•Write daily using different types of writing; e.g., personal letter, informational, creative, persuasive and poetry

 

•Use correct punctuation: comma in dates, city and state, titles of books, addresses, and items in a series

 

•Use correct capitalization: geographical names, holidays, historical periods, and special events

 

•Use correct grammar: identify and use verb tenses (past, present, and future), subject verb agreement, pronouns, adjectives,

compound words, and articles

 

•Use dictionary skills (spelling, guide words, definitions and alphabetize to the 3rd letter)

 

•Use both cursive writing and printing

 

•Use complete and correct sentences

 

•Spell high frequency words and word families; apply spelling rules
