Language Arts

By the end of SECOND GRADE

 

Reading

 

Students will:

 

•Read independently every day in class

 

•Read and discuss meanings in a text

 

•Compare information on the same topic/theme from 2 or more sources

 

•Make personal connections to literature

 

•Decode words with consonant clusters (e.g., "cl" in clap) and special vowel spellings

 

•Read to understand using prediction, phonics, word order, and meaning

 

•Read aloud fluently with good expression; self-correct errors

 

•Retell stories in sequence

 

•Study common antonyms, synonyms, and homonyms to understand word meaning

 

•Restate facts and details of informational text

 

•Interpret information from diagrams, charts, and graphs

 

•Identify the main idea

 

•Summarize text and draw conclusions

 

Speaking and Listening

 

Students will:

 

•Demonstrate good manners

 

•Tell a story that has a beginning, middle and end

 

•Respond to literature and participate in class discussions

 

Writing

 

Students will:

 

•Write daily for 30 minutes on self-selected topics

 

•Writing Domains: Evaluation, Problem Solution, Firsthand Biography, and Story

 

•Edit and rewrite a piece of writing to final copy

 

•Use correct capitalization: proper noun, calendar, titles and initials of people, beginning of sentence, and greetings

 

•Use correct punctuation: comma in a series, quotation marks, personal letter, and dates

 

•Use correct grammar: nouns, verbs, and complete sentences

 

•Alphabetize words to second letter

 

•Identify and use parts of words (e.g., syllables, endings, plurals, contractions, root words)

 

•Distinguish between complete and incomplete sentence

 

•Write using complete sentences

 

•Spell high-frequency words and word families
