By the end of FIRST GRADE
Reading
Students will:
Read independently every day in class
Predict words, story events, and story endings
Choose a book at independent level
Use reading strategies: meaning, word order, letter sounds, context, rereading to clarify
Read consonants, blends, long and short vowel sounds to "sound out"
Use finger pointing to match spoken word with written word
Use familiar words to read unfamiliar words; word families, roots, endings
Read at least 50 common regular sight words
Retell text including beginning, middle and end of story
Identify main characters, setting, and plot
Read familiar books fluently aloud
Students will:
Demonstrate good manners
Respond to who, what, where, when, and how questions
Relate an event in sequential order
Recognize syllables in a word (e.g., fam-i-ly, cook-ie)
Recite personal information (birth date, telephone number and address)
Respond to literature and participate in class discussions
Students will:
Write daily for 30 minutes on self-selected topics
Writing Domains: Autobiographical Incident, Report of Information, Story and Observational Writing
Create stories orally and through pictures
Prewrite, draft, edit, and sometimes make a final copy
Use correct punctuation: question mark, exclamation point, period
Use correct capitalization: peoples' names, I, beginning of sentence
Spell and use 50 high frequency words
Use temporary spelling for unknown words
Print upper and lower case letters legibly
Use spacing between words
