Healdsburg Public Schools Welcome You!

Healdsburg public schools are hosting many events for prospective students and their parents to visit the campuses. The next event is “An Introduction to Healdsburg’s Kindergartens” at Live Oak Preschool at 6:30 pm on February 9th. A panel consisting of alumni parents, kindergarten teachers, Healdsburg Elementary School (HES) Principal Laurie Whiteside, and School Board Trustee Mary Burke will present information on the kindergarten program. Panel members will highlight the academic goals and achievements of the program as well as the social benefits of attending a school that mirrors the diversity and caring community of Healdsburg. They will also be available to answer questions and address specific concerns of attendees. Parents of preschoolers who would like to attend this event may do so by contacting English Olney at 433-4334. English is a parent volunteer on the Healdsburg Unified School District Communications Committee and is coordinating the preschool outreach program. Although HES was one of her last school visits last year when looking at schools, she immediately knew it was the type of education and school environment she wanted for her family. And, she couldn’t believe that it was right next door. English strongly encourages all preschool parents to visit the classrooms and activities available at Healdsburg Elementary. Also in March, the panel will provide a similar program to the parents of preschoolers at the Healdsburg Community Nursery School.

In addition to the preschool outreach program, the annual Kindergarten Information Night hosted by the kindergarten teachers will be held on March 16th at 6:30 pm at Healdsburg Elementary. Specific information on the standard kindergarten and the dual immersion programs will be discussed, as will important information about how to register your child for school. Another event is tentatively scheduled for March 23rd specifically for the dual immersion program offered starting in kindergarten. Principal Laurie Whiteside and the teaching staff also invite preschool children and their parents to visit Healdsburg Elementary during the school day. Guided tours of the campus are scheduled for March 15th and March 29th led by School Board Trustee (and retired elementary educator) Judy Velasquez. To sign up for a tour or for other information, please call the school office at 431-3440.

For those with students about to move on to junior high, Healdsburg Junior High (HJH) Principal John Curry will be hosting a “Middle School Information Session” on February 23rd at 6:30 pm at HJH. This fall Mr. Curry and staff will welcome not only incoming 7th graders, but also 6th graders. This session is the second in a series of presentations which will provide the most recent developments of this transition to a middle school program. For further information, Mr. Curry can be contacted at 431-3410 or by e-mail at john.curry@husd.com.

Healdsburg High School (HHS) is welcoming prospective students and parents to tour the campus on January 31st, February 28th, March 2nd and March 31st. Admission Nights for incoming students are being held in the HHS Library on February 22nd (5:30 to 7:00 pm) and February 23rd (3:30 to 5:00 pm with a bilingual session from 5:30 to 7:00pm). Students and parents will receive admission and curriculum information during these events. For tour times and reservations, please call the school office at 431-3420 or e-mail Principal Karen Ricketts at kricketts@husd.com

Just last week Healdsburg High School (HHS) welcomed 8th grade students and their parents to a Winter Open House. After refreshments and introductions, members of the student body leadership and the Peer Helping teams led tours of the campus. Highlights included Brent Mortensen’s incredibly dramatic center of learning, Mrs. Lehrmann’s student staff of The Hound’s Bark working diligently on the next edition of the school newspaper, and Healdsburg’s own cable network station, AH!TV. All who viewed the media center’s recording studio and sound set for Friday Night Jams were impressed to find such a well-equipped facility right on campus. The computer lab, language lab, ceramics center, auto shop, music room, art gallery and many classrooms were staffed with faculty explaining the variety of course offerings. Open House attendees received free admission to the Healdsburg Girls’ Basketball game that night in the recently remodeled Smith Robinson Gymnasium. Thanks to the many student and parent volunteers, faculty, staff and administration the Winter Open House was a great way to see the campus and learn about the opportunities offered.
