Superintendent's Back To School Letter
Dear HUSD School Community
Having worked in public education all my professional life and as the
son of a high school principal, the opening day of school is always a
special time for me. This year is even more exciting. The HUSD is
opening the brand new Fitch Mountain Campus of the Healdsburg Elementary
School. This new school site is a beautiful building and is a true
testament to the support that our School District continues to receive
from the Healdsburg Community.
As part of their goal to unify and strengthen the HUSD elementary school
program, the Board directed the District Administration to re-organize
to one elementary school housed on two campuses. Our Kindergarten
through second grade students will be attending classes at the
Healdsburg Elementary School HES Campus at 400 First Street, Principal
Laurie Whiteside and the third through the fifth grade will be on the
new Fitch Mountain Campus at 520 Monte Vista Avenue, Principal Aracely
Romo-Flores. We feel our new configuration affords the opportunity for
students to get to know each other and bond in a healthy and
academically focused environment over thirteen years. This wonderful
opportunity is not likely to occur in larger Districts.
At the Junior High School some exciting changes are taking place. Debra
Hall is the new Principal and Carole Reed is the new Vice Principal.
Both ladies bring a wealth of experience to our District. Our sixth
graders will be joining the seventh and eighth graders this year. The
trend to have the sixth grade on the same campus as seventh and eighth
grade mirrors what is occurring all over the State. The data indicates
that the new sixth grade model better prepares students for the
traditional junior high school and high school schedule where students
go to a different class every period.
At the High School, we have a brand new administrative team. Former
Junior High Principal John Curry has taken over the reins as Principal
and has been joined by Vice Principal Kestrel Davis and Dean of
Students, Kent Cromwell. High energy and enthusiasm is abundant at the
school.
This school year will be a monumental one for us. We will continue our
efforts to make the Healdsburg Unified School District a model school
district in the State. Our goal is to offer a program that challenges
our best and brightest students and also meets the needs of our learners
with special needs.
