Issue 97 FOSS CREEK SCHOOL PARENT SURVEY 2005 Last Spring, at the end of the 2005 school year, the Site Council of Foss Creek Elementary School (FCS) surveyed the parents of Foss students. As required by the State, the Site Council identifies school site needs and develops school improvement plans. These plans are monitored to determine their effectiveness in reaching the school’s goals. Members of the Council include the principal, teachers, parents and students. The 2005 survey was designed to gather general information about what the parents thought about the school and their relationship with the school. Parents of returning students, as well as those who would be moving on to junior high, were surveyed. Foss Creek School is using this survey information to implement improvements toward recognition as a California School of Excellence. As Aracely Romo-Flores, principal of FCS, is enthusiastic about the number of parents who “strongly agree or agree” that the school is a safe, friendly, and academically sound environment. The average percentage of parents who answered “strongly agree or agree” was 87%; 7% had “no opinion” and only 6% answered “disagree or strongly disagree”. The survey questions were designed to obtain information about all aspects of parent and students’ experiences with the school. Multiple-choice questions were asked about the staff, principal, teachers, yard duty, communications, disciplinary actions, curriculum, extracurricular activities, and academic progress in reading, writing and mathematics. There were also open-ended questions asking how to increase parent volunteer participation, what Foss Creek should stop doing and what Foss Creek should start doing. There were dozens of responses to these questions with a lot of useful information for the Site Council. The following is a sampling of a few questions and results: Question: I feel my child is content attending Foss Creek School. 92% “strongly agree or agree”, 3% “no opinion” and 5% “disagree or strongly disagree”. Question: I feel my child’s teacher treats my child with respect. 96% “strongly agree or agree”, 1% “no opinion” and 3% “disagree or strongly disagree”. Question: I feel the teachers communicate in a positive and timely manner. 92% “strongly agree or agree”, 3% “no opinion” and 5% “disagree or strongly disagree”. The final survey question response that provides the best overall “report card” for Foss Creek is the following: Question: I am pleased with the overall education my child is receiving at Foss Creek School. 94% “strongly agree or agree, 1% “no opinion” and 5% “disagree or strongly disagree”. Ninety-four percent of the Foss Creek parent population respondents can’t be all wrong. However, as Mrs. Romo-Flores indicated, “The staff at Foss Creek School is dedicated to meeting the needs of all our students and their families. We welcome parent and community involvement to help us reach our goals.” Volunteers are always needed to assist in the classrooms, school store, PTA, Site Council, and fundraising. To volunteer, call the office at 431-3492. The Foss Creek Site Council thanks all those parents who took the time to participate and to offer such valuable feedback. ----------------------
