Farewell From Superintendent Kay Schultz

To the Healdsburg Community:
In May School Board President Deas announced that I am resigning as superintendent effective July 1, 2005. I have accepted the superintendent's position for Mark West School District. I am very excited about the opportunity to work in an elementary district. Twenty of my twenty-nine years has been spent working at the elementary level. I am committed to public education and now I have the opportunity to redirect my expertise to focus at the elementary level.

Healdsburg Unified School District has been very good to me and I have thoroughly enjoyed my ten years serving the youth of Healdsburg. Healdsburg has a committed school board, dedicated and caring staff, wonderful students, supportive parents and a community that values education. Over the last several years this district has accomplished much:

  • Implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan that has guided our unified school district
  • Development and implementation of K-12 curriculum and assessments that are aligned with the state standards
  • Professional development for staff on teaching strategies to motivate all students
  • Implementation of intervention programs, support classes, after school tutorial, jump-start academy, and programs to support our English Language Learners
  • Increased number of advance placement classes at the high school
  • Successful passage of two major bond measures
  • Modernization projects and new construction at the junior high school and high school
  • Development of schools in which technology is used daily as a tool
  • Increased connections between families and schools

Healdsburg Unified School District has several challenges ahead. The largest challenge is to remain fiscally solvent and under local control. The District’s intention is to retain the quality of our educational programs. This can only occur if everyone in the Healdsburg community works together to restore vital programs that have been cut. An excellent example of such an effort is the Band of Parents presentation of a $30,000 check to the school district in May to fund our elementary music position for the 2005-06 school year. Several organizations, parents and the community joined forces to raise these necessary funds to sustain the band program for our elementary students.

The District requests that the Healdsburg community come together to restore our schools’ library programs, 7-12 athletic/sport programs, K-12 counseling programs, and student activities/clubs, to name a few. We can no longer rely on the State of California to adequately fund public education. It is up to our local community to provide the best educational opportunities our youth deserve. Do not hesitate - become involved and reinstate these vital programs. For information on current fund raising programs, contact the Healdsburg Education Foundation at www.HEFschools.com

There is nothing more rewarding than to have our students successfully complete their K-12 public education to meet whatever challenges they may face. To the entire Healdsburg Community, I thank you for the opportunity to serve you for the last ten years and hope you continue to support public education for the youth in our community.
