Issue 67 SCHOOL BOARD RETREAT
The Board of Trustees and Superintendent of the Healdsburg Unified
School District met Friday, May 7, 2004, for their annual Board Retreat.
As in past years, the purpose of the retreat was to evaluate our past
performance, define strategies to improve board meetings, and set goals
for the 2004-05 school year.
Board Effectiveness.
We reviewed how we interacted with each other, our staff, and our
community over the past year. We identified ways to improve how we work
together, how to improve the effectiveness of our meetings, and how we
could better communicate to our community. We also agreed to begin the
implementation of the changes. When you attend the next school board
meeting you'll notice an evaluation of the meeting added to the agenda.
We hope to review each meeting, identify areas of improvement, and plan
how to communicate any outcomes.
Board Goals.
We also worked on our Board Goals. These goals are defined as our most
important areas of focus for next year. They are the board's top
priorities and focus of resources for the district. These goals will be
reviewed and approved by us at our June board meeting.
The five main areas of concentration are:
1. HUSD WILL IMPROVE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS.
Our students will read, write, and master mathematical concepts at grade
levels as defined by district and state standards. The district's target
is to increase achievement for all students and reduce the achievement
gap between students whose primary language is not English or whose
social economic status is defined at the poverty level. This is our top
priority to increase student achievement for all students in the
district.
2. HUSD WILL HAVE COMPARABLE, COMPETITIVE COMPENSATION FOR ALL
EMPLOYEES. The board's goal is to attract and retain employees for our
district.
3. HUSD WILL WISELY INVEST IN OUR SCHOOL FACILITIES.
The district will complete the improvements of our elementary and
secondary schools by successfully implementing Measures G and H. The
Board has adopted a calendar and budget to execute the specific projects
in the bond measures to have safe and up-to-date school facilities.
4. HUSD STAFF WILL WORK SYSTEMATICALLY TO INCREASE STUDENT DAILY
ATTENDANCE AND PROMOTE OUR SCHOOLS AND THE DISTRICT. Our goal is to have
students attend school everyday unless absent due to illness/medical or
family emergency.
The district will continue to promote its schools through the website,
newspaper, presentations and other publications.
5. HUSD WILL ENHANCE REVENUE TO RESTORE AND EXPAND OUR PROGRAMS. The
district will work with our service organizations, clubs, foundation,
and businesses to increase our income in order to re-instate the vital
programs for all students. This is a collective goal to continue
offering the excellent programs for the youth of Healdsburg.
The Board and Administration will hold a joint study session in August
to discuss how to assess progress toward our goals.
