Issue 68 Keep Students Challenged During the Summer Now that school is out, the temptation is for students to fritter away the time with mindless activities and forget much of what they have just learned in school. Parents are reminded that there are many ways that they can assist their children in keeping their minds active and challenged during the summer months. Here are some examples: - Plan reading groups with friends. Pick a book. Read it. Discuss it. - Plan a dinner. Buy the groceries together and cook together. Try doubling the recipes. - Plan a vacation, real or make believe. Use a map. Figure the mileage, gas, hotel costs. Get vacation books from AAA. - There are many opportunities for a child to read during the summer: read to a younger child, volunteer at the library to read, read when you babysit or volunteer to read at Day Camp. - Take your child to interesting places during the summer and discuss the event before, during and afterward. Take them to historical, geologic, artistic places and discuss what makes them so special. - Read, read, read – humor books, Sports Illustrated, comic books and newspaper comic pages can be sources for reading for children turned off to reading - Practice each day some of the math problems that were taught last year, just to keep up - addition, subtraction, and multiplication – drill, drill, drill… - Take your child to the library to check out books. The public library has a "Summer Reading Club". - ELL parents - Have children watch the Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel to improve their English comprehension and vocabulary. - Encourage your child to start a journal or write to a pen pal. If he/she doesn’t like to write, suggest that they dictate to you or into a tape recorder.
