What To Do When Your Child Has A Problem At School

Our schools are committed not only to providing the best curriculum to the children of Healdsburg, but to working together to provide a safe, positive educational environment. There are inevitable concerns with five hundred to a thousand children and young people sharing a campus. Our staff is available to parents and students if they are experiencing difficulties at any of our campuses. If your child is having problems at school, please call to allow our staff to work with you to provide as positive an educational experience as possible. Each of our sites has access to a conflict resolution process which involves trained students working with their peers. At the High School, it is the Peer Counseling program, coordinated by Sylvia Todd, which allows students easy access to trained, understanding peers. Each site also has counselors to assist students and their families.

Harassment:
If your child feels they are being harassed, this should be reported immediately in writing or in person. Students should not respond to harassment, but should seek help from adults at their school. If the matter seems more to be an argument or rumors being passed, a conflict resolution meeting can be arranged. At the elementary schools, contact the principal; at the Junior and Senior High Schools, contact the assistant principal.

Stolen property:
If your child says they have had property stolen, report it immediately. Unfortunately, it is usually impossible for us to recover stolen property but the schools do their best. We have a police officer on campus at the High School. Again, stolen property should be reported at the elementary schools to the principal and at the Junior and Senior High Schools to the assistant principals.

Discipline issue:
If your child has been involved in a discipline infraction, you will receive a written referral from the Junior High School and a suspension notice from the High School. Patti Reeves at the Junior High and Tom Kirkpatrick at the High School work hard with our students to maintain adherence to our codes of behavior and dress and are available to discuss your concerns in these areas.

Drug or alcohol issue:
If you are concerned that your child may be experimenting with drugs or alcohol or is exhibiting behavior unusual for him or her, call the elementary school principal or Junior or Senior High assistant principal. They can help you sort out where to go for help or put you in contact with one of the school counselors.

Classroom problems:
If you have questions about classroom issues, teacher issues, homework, or curriculum, please contact your child’s teacher directly. After a discussion with the teacher, if your concerns have not been satisfactorily addressed, it would be appropriate to call the school principal. If you have concerns at the Junior or Senior High level about your child’s credits or possibility of problems with promotion, call the Junior High principal or your child’s High School counselor.
