Terrific HHS/HJH Music Programs
On Saturday, April 12, both the Advanced Band from HJH and the HHS Concert
Band performed at the annual CMEA Band Festival, hosted this year by Dr.
Brian Wilson at SSU. The HJH kids performed first for the panel of
adjudicators who gave either taped or written comments to them. After this
20-minute mini-concert, the kids went to another room where they were
given a piece of music that they had never seen. The director, Randy
Masselink was given 5 minutes to look his part over and to give
instructions to the kids. No playing or rehearsing was allowed. The band
then had to perform the piece at sight, again with comments and a rating
given by the judge. This was the first time that HJH has sent a band to
this event, at least within the last several years if not more, and they
did very well for a first time effort. The ratings given by the judges
were from "good" to "excellent," and the comments were very encouraging
and constructive. The HHS band played very soon afterwards and followed
the same format. This was the 3rd year that the HHS band has participated,
and again got all "excellent" ratings. Many parents and friends were there
to hear and support the groups, in spite of the early hour and ugly
weather conditions! It was a very positive experience for the kids and a
good showing for our schools.
On May 3 the HHS Chorus also participated in the CMEA Choral Festival
hosted this year by Santa Rosa High School. HHS has not sent a choral
group to this event for many years (if ever) and we are very proud to have
sent a group to represent us this year. The performance, judging and
rating format was very similar to that of the Band Festival, with the
exception that instead of doing a sight-reading session, one of the judges
worked with our group after their performance.
We will have both the HHS Concert Band and the Advanced Bands from Foss
and HES participating in the FFA parade on May 23. This is an annual event
and is always fun.
On Wed. May 28 the HHS Concert and Jazz Bands will perform a combined
concert with the HJH bands at the HJH gym at 7:00. Each group will perform
separately and then will join together for a finale. The next day, May 29
the HJH band members will be going to Marine World, another annual event.
On Wednesday, June 4, 7 pm, the HHS Choir will give its spring concert in
the HHS cafeteria. Again, this is something we do every year, featuring
the "greatest hits" from this past school year and also many solos from
members of the group.
The following night, Thurs. June 5 the Beginning and Advanced Bands of
Foss Creek and HES will perform their spring concert together with the HJH
combined bands. This program will also begin at 7 pm and will be in the
Smith Robinson Gym.
And finally, on Sunday afternoon, June 8 from 2 - 4 pm, the Healdsburg
Community Band and the HHS Concert Band will be performing in the
Healdsburg Plaza for the first "Concert in the Park" program of this
season.
And, of course, the bands also play at the respective graduation
ceremonies, so as you can see, we have a busy few weeks ahead of us!
