NEW 21st CENTURY GRANT WORKSHOPS BEGIN

On March 11, this year’s final session of grant-funded student workshops begin at Healdsburg Junior High, Marce Becerra Academy, and Healdsburg High School. Students may select from among forty workshops each week at the high school. Students at the junior high have over twenty-five options each week for tutorials and recreational activities.

Funded by the federal government, this program is intended to provide academic support and recreation for students “beyond the bell.” In order to offer students many choices, the school district has established partnerships with the Boys and Girls Club, Sirens Studio, Circuit Rider Productions, and Sonoma County Office of Education. In addition, many teachers and community members are offering workshops for students.

The program has many new opportunities for students this spring. At Healdsburg Junior High, the new workshops include:

·        Science Adventures  -  lab activities in physics, chemistry and biology

·        Mexican Folk Dance - different dances from throughout Mexico

·        All About You - activities to help understand learning styles and how to be a team player

·        Enjoying the Movies - film viewing and skills to become an informed critic

·        Web Design - professional instruction in web design/html.

In addition, students may continue to learn cooking, dance, guitar, sculpture, and more.

At Healdsburg High School, students may continue in workshops such as drawing, painting, ceramics, Spanish tutoring, conditioning, or homework help. There are also many new workshops, including:

·        Accessing Architecture - basic drafting and model making

·        Computer Animation and Graphics - Flash software to create animated projects

·        Restoration and Tree Planting - field experience to restore a local area

·        Cheerleading 101- workshop for students with limited experience to learn what cheerleading is all about

·        Flamenco Dance - fundamentals of a traditional dance

·        Welding - basic welding techniques to make simple repairs.

·        Jobs Your Counselor Never Told You About - turning passion into money making

Some workshops are also open to adults such as creative writing and the English Language Skill Improvement Lab. Brochures that describe the full program have been sent home with each secondary student.

In April, the district grant Advisory Board will begin planning the program for the fall. Parents and community members who might like to be involved are encouraged to get in touch with Laurie Leach at 431-3482.
