NEW
21st CENTURY GRANT WORKSHOPS BEGIN On
March 11, this years final session of grant-funded student workshops
begin at Healdsburg Junior High, Marce Becerra Academy, and Healdsburg
High School. Students may select from among forty workshops each week at
the high school. Students at the junior high have over twenty-five options
each week for tutorials and recreational activities. Funded
by the federal government, this program is intended to provide academic
support and recreation for students beyond the bell. In order to
offer students many choices, the school district has established
partnerships with the Boys and Girls Club, Sirens Studio, Circuit Rider
Productions, and Sonoma County Office of Education. In addition, many
teachers and community members are offering workshops for students. The
program has many new opportunities for students this spring. At Healdsburg
Junior High, the new workshops include: ·
Science
Adventures -
lab activities in physics, chemistry and biology ·
Mexican
Folk Dance - different dances from throughout Mexico ·
All
About You - activities to help understand learning styles and how to be a
team player ·
Enjoying
the Movies - film viewing and skills to become an informed critic ·
Web
Design - professional instruction in web design/html. In
addition, students may continue to learn cooking, dance, guitar,
sculpture, and more. At
Healdsburg High School, students may continue in workshops such as
drawing, painting, ceramics, Spanish tutoring, conditioning, or homework
help. There are also many new workshops, including: ·
Accessing
Architecture - basic drafting and model making ·
Computer
Animation and Graphics - Flash software to create animated projects ·
Restoration
and Tree Planting - field experience to restore a local area ·
Cheerleading
101- workshop for students with limited experience to learn what
cheerleading is all about ·
Flamenco
Dance - fundamentals of a traditional dance ·
Welding
- basic welding techniques to make simple repairs. ·
Jobs
Your Counselor Never Told You About - turning passion into money making Some
workshops are also open to adults such as creative writing and the English
Language Skill Improvement Lab. Brochures that describe the full program
have been sent home with each secondary student. In
April, the district grant Advisory Board will begin planning the program
for the fall. Parents and community members who might like to be involved
