Healdsburg
High School Center for Independent Study (CIS) The
CIS is an alternative that may be an attractive option for a child’s
high school experience. Parents who are considering options to the
traditional approach for a child who is a self starter may find this an
appropriate alternative. Independent
Study is a challenging and academically rigorous alternative to the
traditional classroom setting which is consistent with Healdsburg High
School’s course of study. Students
participating in Independent Study enter into an agreement with the school
to see teachers for regularly scheduled weekly appointments and do their
course work independently. All
students and their parents sign semester-long contracts and course
agreements which outline the specific requirements for participation in
the program. Independent
Study is a voluntary alternative to consider for self-disciplined students
reading at or above grade level. To
participate in this alternative, a student must be ready to take an active
role in his or her education and parents must be prepared to supply a
support system at home to help students stay on track.
As a recognized alternative to regular classroom study, the
independent study option is expected to be equal to or superior in quality
to classroom instruction. The
Independent Study option allows the student to take up to three classes in
the traditional classroom environment at HHS as well as classes at the
Santa Rosa JC, on line and through Sonoma County’s Regional Occupational
Program. This option also
allows the student to participate in all of the traditional HHS
activities, clubs and sports. The
end result of the program is an HHS diploma, satisfying all the
requirements of the traditional program.
Teachers
at the Center are highly qualified experienced professionals.
Teachers work collaboratively on a daily basis to ensure a positive
learning experience for students. Currently,
there are four full time teachers at the CIS.
There are about 90 students in the program. Teachers meet weekly with students and have the opportunity
to foster close relationships, often taking on the role of mentor.
Students
in grades 9-12 who reside in the Healdsburg Unified School District are
eligible to participate in the Independent Study Program.
Students residing outside of the district must file an application
with the Center and must obtain an inter-district transfer permit prior to
consideration for the program. All
students considering the program must be interviewed by the lead
teacher/counselor (Beth Bermudes) and complete an essay explaining why
they want to enroll in the program. During
the interview process, a determination will be made as to whether or not
the program is a good fit for the academic and personal needs of the
student. A key factor in making this decision will be the commitment
demonstrated by both student and parents to create a home environment for
study which will allow the student to keep up with assigned work on a
regular basis. Instruction through Independent Study allows students to study at their own pace while challenging each student to excel in his or her area of special interest and abilities. It facilitates the student's active participation in his or her own education and offers real flexibility in the design of an educational program. The CIS offers effective educational choices to students and families. If you think this is a fit for your family, contact Beth Bermudes at BBermudes@husd.com or at 431-3427.
