Healdsburg High School Traditions: Old and New for Fall 2006

The new school year at Healdsburg High School is off to an exciting start with students and staff participating in many traditional activities (homecoming game and dance), as well as starting some new ones. We have the good fortune to have an energetic administration, enthusiastic and supportive parents, creative and innovative faculty, and students that are willing participants in all their ideas. Some of the ‘old’ and ‘new’ that happened in October and are coming soon are:

Homecoming 2006
On Friday, October 20th, a lively crowd filled Art McCaffrey Field for the 2006 Homecoming football game against El Molino High School. The annual tradition of floats decorated by each class revolved around the theme “Shanghai Nights”. The Senior Class won the competition for “Best Float” and our football team won the competition on the gridiron 42-14. Bob Barbieri and Tom O’Hair from Redwood Coast Petroleum presented a check to Healdsburg Unified School District Superintendent Bob Carter at half-time. This donation amounted to a donation of over $10,000 collected by Redwood this year from their “penny a gallon” Business Partnership program with the Healdsburg Education Foundation (HEF). Redwood made the donation through the HEF and designated it for athletic programs. Many thanks to Redwood Coast Petroleum and their customers for their huge show of support to our student athletic programs!

Jazz Music Performance Benefit at Michel-Schlumberger
On Friday night, October 27th, Michel-Schlumberger Wine Estate hosted a Healdsburg Education Foundation benefit concert for Healdsburg High School. The performing musicians were none other than Healdsburg High School English teacher, John Linker and Math teacher Joe DiOrio. These talented teacher musicians delighted the lively crowd with a variety of folk/rock songs that ran from The Beatles, Jimmy Hendrix, to a number of original compositions. Students, parents, teachers and community members enjoyed the beautiful, autumn evening in the courtyard of the West Dry Creek winery. Julianna Chioffe, Michel-Schlumberger Director of Marketing Communications effused “The event turned out so well. It was such positive energy with everyone in support of this cause and of Joe and John. We would love to do a couple of benefit concerts next season with HEF. I love the idea of student musicians playing as well.”

Greyhounds Pitch-In at Beautification Day
John Curry, principal at Healdsburg High School along with Vice-Principal Kestrel Davis and Dean of Students Kent Cromwell headed up a “Beautification Day” for the High School on Saturday October 28th. Eighty-five students, parents, teachers, coaches and Board of Trustee members raked, planted, picked-up and power-washed the entire campus. It was truly a team effort with nearly all of the high school wrestling team and coaches providing much needed muscle power. Principal Curry stated, “The event was so successful that we plan to schedule more beautification days as well as continue to work on campus improvements throughout the year. I was thrilled with all that was accomplished. Thank you to each of you that provided time and materials to make the day such a success.”

58th Annual REIBT
Basketball fans can look forward to another exciting weekend of hoops this December 6-9 when Healdsburg High School hosts the 58th annual Redwood Empire Invitational Basketball Tournament (REIBT) in Smith Robinson Gym. This event is not to be missed! In addition to great high school basketball, on Friday just before noon in the gym, all students attend the REIBT rally to support their teams, watch and cheer on the annual class dance competitions and win some great prizes in the school-wide raffle. And, that night (Friday, December 8th) the Freshman Class hosts their annual REIBT Pasta Dinner and Silent Auction in the school cafeteria from 5:30 to 7:30. This year the event will be catered by Healdsburg’s very own diVine Pizza. In addition to the silent auction, there will be items raffled every 15 minutes. Tickets ($9 in advance, $10 at the door) are available from any Healdsburg High Freshman or by contacting the Freshman Class Advisor, HHS Counselor Ever Flores at eflores@husd.com  or parent volunteer Lorraine Ohlson at 433-4133. Parent volunteer Andrea Ruiz (andrea@christophersonhomes.com)  is looking for silent auction donations and assistance. All proceeds from this event go to the Class of 2010 to pay for their class activities through each year of high school and to reduce their senior class dues. Donations may also be made to the Healdsburg Education Foundation and designated to the Class of 2010.
