Transportation Letter to Parents

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Our mission is to provide the highest quality and safest school transportation for your children enrolled in Healdsburg Schools.  To help better understand and appreciate who we have behind the wheel of that big yellow bus, let me explain what it takes to become a licensed school bus driver.

All school bus drivers must first be interviewed by the California Highway Patrol who also does an extensive background check through fingerprinting.   This is done after we have screened and interviewed.  All school bus drivers must possess a Class B license with a passenger endorsement, air brake endorsement, and commercial vehicle knowledge.  In addition, drivers are required by law to receive no less than 40 hours of instruction on rules and regulations and behind the wheel training (this usually entails about 60-70 hours).  Then they must pass written tests at DMV and CHP before going on to their final drive test at CHP. All drivers must pass certain physical requirements, possess first aid skills, and maintain no less than 10 hours training yearly after their certification as a driver.

School bus drivers are professionally trained and must be able to not only drive a 40 foot bus, but also control as many as 84 passengers (all behind them!), know all the rules of the road, watch for traffic and road hazards as well as inclement weather, and still drive your children home or to school safely despite the odds.

It is extremely important that students know and understand the rules and regulations and consequences.  The least amount of distraction a driver has, the safer the bus trip.  Please help insure a safe ride by going over the rules and the danger zones of school buses with your children.

Attached you will find bus rules, bus stop locations, approved walking distances, bus danger zones, red light crossing procedures, and how to walk safely to and from bus stops.  PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.

  Thank you for your support.
