Option 1 - This option is the "Mainstream English program available to students that have a good working knowledge of the English language (LAS 4-5). The Limited English Proficient (LEP) or redesignated LEP students that fall in this category would be assigned to regular English classes. The instruction is given 100% of the day in English. Parents of students in grades K-12 could ask for this option if they fit the criteria. This would require parents to sign Waiver A. Option 2 - This option is the "Structured English Immersion" program. LEP students that are reasonably fluent in English, minimum LAS 3, would participate in a program where the majority of their instruction would be in English with part of the day set aside for primary language instruction. The percentages would be 60 English and 40 Spanish for grades K-6. In grades 7-12 a minimum of 4 periods a day in English instruction and the remainder in Spanish instruction. LEP students that are 10 years or older need their parents to sign Waiver B to participate in this option. LEP students in grades 7-12 that are in ESL classes would be the only secondary students affected by this option. Option 3 - This option is for LEP students with special needs, which would be determined after the first 30 calendar days they are enrolled in school. The "Two-Way Immersion" program would meet the needs of these LEP students. This is a program that has been offered for the last 8 years in our district. Parents would need to sign Waiver C for the LEP student or Waiver A for the student that already has a good working knowledge of the English language. This program offers LEP students access to the core curriculum in their primary language while supporting their second language learning. The percentages of language instruction would be as follows:
K/1 - 80 Spanish 20 English Option 4 - This option would be an Intensive English Language Development Newcomer" program. The participants in this program would be the recent arrivals from other countries. That means that they would have arrived less than 12 months prior to enrolling in California schools and would be identified a LAS 1-2. LEP students would be in this program for 12 months with 100% intensive English language development and some primary language support. After the 12 months in the program, students would then be eligible for the main stream English class unless parents and school personnel feel that the student should participate in a different program for maximum student learning. The program would be offered K-12 and could place English learners of various ages in the same classroom. Revised 8/14/98 |
