Curriculum

STANDARD 8:  TECHNOLOGY AND RESOURCES 

    Students use a variety of technological and informational resources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, video) to gather and synthesize information and to create and communicate knowledge. 

    Technology has opened new worlds to students.  To utilize these valuable resources, they use computers and other interactive media.  This knowledge equips them to attain their goals and career choices.  Access to a wealth of information, ideas, and visual images enhances academic success and empowers students as lifelong learners.

· Students will demonstrate competence in using technology as a production tool in many disciplines to solve problems and communicate ideas.

· Students will demonstrate ability to access and synthesize information with available technologies.

· Students will use technology responsibly, legally and ethically.

2.  Present information orally or in written form gleaned from a variety of sources

3. Continue building computer skills, use of overhead, and video

 

THIRD GRADE

1.  Practice  basic keyboarding skills as available

2. Begin to use word processing

3. Use classroom, school, and public library (including CD ROM) to gather information on a selected topic

 

FOURTH GRADE

1. Use organizational features of electronic media including entry and pull-down menus and spell checks to create simple documents

2. Use word processing on the computer

3. Use classroom, school, and public library (including CD ROM) to gather information  on a selected topic

 

FIFTH GRADE

1. Use word processing on the computer

2.  Create documents using word-processing skills and publishing programs

3.  Introduce organizational features of electronic texts such as bulletin boards, key word searches and e- mail  addresses to locate information

4. Use classroom, school, and public library (including CD ROM) to gather information on a selected topic

 

SIXTH GRADE

1. Use various resources for locating information in order to write a research paper or report (e.g., libraries, computer networks)

2. Recognize and name main computer components

3. Compose documents with appropriate formatting by using word processing skills

4. Use tape recorder and other technology

5. Use computer programs with ease

 

SEVENTH GRADE

1. Compose documents with appropriate formatting using word-processing skills,

graphics  (as available)

EIGHTH GRADE

1. Do multi-stepped information searches using local libraries, wide area networks, and modem-delivered information (as available)

 

NINTH/TENTH GRADE

1.  Identify the aesthetic effects of a media presentation and evaluate the techniques used to create them (e.g., compare Shakespeare’s Henry V  to Kenneth Branagh’s 1990 film version)

2.  Demonstrate use of sophisticated learning tools by following technical directions (e.g., graphic calculators, specialized software programs, access guides to Internet worldwide websites)

3.  Design and publish multi-paged documents using advanced publishing software and graphic programs

 

ELEVENTH/TWELFTH GRADE

1.  Interpret and evaluate the various ways that visual image-makers (e.g., graphic artists, documentary filmmakers, illustrators, news photographers) present events and communicate information

2.  Analyze the techniques used in media messages for a particular audience and evaluate their effectiveness (e.g., Orson Welles’ radio broadcast, “War of the Worlds”)

3.  Evaluate when to use different kinds of images (e.g., visual, music, sound effects, graphic) to create effective productions

4.  Deliver multimedia presentations that; combine text, images, and sound incorporating information from a wide range of media, including television, videos, films, newspapers, magazines, CD ROMs, on-line information, and computer media-generated images, select an appropriate medium for each element of the  presentation, use the selected media skillfully, including editing and monitoring for quality, test audience response and revise the presentation accordingly

5.  Integrate databases, graphics, and spreadsheets into word-processed documents
